From an interview with SBC CEO Edward Whitacre:

How concerned are you about Internet upstarts like Google (GOOG ), MSN, Vonage, and others?
“How do you think they’re going to get to customers? Through a broadband pipe. Cable companies have them. We have them. Now what they would like to do is use my pipes free, but I ain’t going to let them do that because we have spent this capital and we have to have a return on it. So there’s going to have to be some mechanism for these people who use these pipes to pay for the portion they’re using. Why should they be allowed to use my pipes?”

To answer Whitacre, the answer is simple, and direct. You should allow them to use your pipes because that’s the destination that I’ve chosen to get to. And I’m your customer, the one who’s paying for those pipes.

Whitacre seems not to grasp the fact that the Internet is a network of networks. He’s telling his customers in this quote that if you’re a customer of SBC, and you want to recieve content from someone who’s not a customer of SBC, you’re going to be shit outta luck.

The concept is simple. I, the end user customer, pay SBC to move my packets, and any packets I request to be sent to me, from point A (my location) to point B (the location where the content resides). No more, no less. If I request a page from Google, it’s not Google using SBC’s pipes for free. It’s me, the customer, who pays for my pipe every month, using those pipes. You would think that, as simple as this concept is, the CEO of a multibillion dollar company could grasp it.

Charles Graner was convicted on Friday on five charges related to the Abu Ghraib scandal. His defense is one that is going to be used by other defendants, whos lawyers will claim that they were just following orders.

One of the things that the defendants, and the counsel for the defendents, seem to have forgotten, is that American military personnel are sworn to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” and to “obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to the regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.”

The upshot of this is that they are still bound by the UCMJ. What does this mean in a practical sense? It means that they’re supposed to obey all lawful orders given them. If, and the case is still unproven, they were ordered to do what they did, they were morally, ethically, and legally obliged to refuse such orders. “I was just following orders” has never worked as a successful defense in recent history; such a defense was attempted at Neurenburg, and in many cases since then, with always the same result: conviction of the wrong doer.

It’s been fascinating to watch the political and media wrangling in the wake of the tsunami. America’s efforts were described as stingy, an accusation that I’ve seen repeated recently in the traditional media. It’s time to debunk some of the myths.

The US government has initiall allocated $350 million in an aid package. This would seem, at first glance, to be a small amount of money when compared to the $764 million promised by Australia, the $690M by Germany, and $500M from Japan. But let’s examine the real numbers. The $350 million in aid being promised by the US doesn’t count military spending, which was estimated on the 5th of January to be $6M a day, and expected to increase as more ships, aircraft, and personell move into the area. That’s $42 million a week, or more than $80 million since the tsunami first rolled ashore in Banda Aceh. And that’s just the money spent by one branch of the US military to provide humanitarian aid, the Navy. There are millions more spent by the US Army and the Air Force, which has been flying supplies to the aire non-stop since day one on a variety of aircraft, such as the C-130, the C-17, and the huge C-5 Galaxy. Let’s look at the $500M offered by Japan. There’s a clause in that grant…that states that they can only have that money if they spend it buying Japanese goods and services. Hardly an aid package, rather a taxpayer funded boost to the Japanese economy disguised as disaster relief.

Let’s examine the UN’s involvement in the disaster relief efforts. The UN has claimed all along that they should be in charge of coordinating the response to the disaster. One UN staffer even had the audacity to claim that the UN was the only organization with the moral authority to respond to this disaster. Moral authority? Excuse me? On Jan. 3, as this blog reports, the UN’s primary concern was coordinating 24 hour catering for the meetings they were having at a 5-star hotel removed from the real action. No UN peacekeepers, no UN aid workers, no UN supplies…the real work, on the ground, in the disaster area, saving lives, is being done is by the US, Australian, and Singaporean military and aid workers. It appears that nobody in the area really expects, or even wants, the UN to be involved. Perhaps because they don’t want their women and children raped by UN “Peacekeepers".

If you’ve been paying any attention at all to the recent budget brouhaha, you’ll notice that the National Science Foundation took a beating, with it’s budget being slashed by Congress. Not only did they not get what the President asked for in his budget, but they didn’t even keep up with inflation.

If you’re unfamiliar with the National Science Foundation, a quick background: the NSF provides grants and other funds for the basic research that allows our contry to maintain its technological and scientific preeminance. They fund a variety of programs in a variety of fields, including computer science, mathmatics, physics, medicine, archaeology, genetics, astronomy, chemistry…virtually the entire range of human scientific study. At a time when we’re graduating fewer and fewer engineers and scientists, and our students are falling behind other countries in the comprehension of maths and science, is cutting the funding of this federal agency, one of the few that produces a real, tangible benefit in our lives and economy, really such a wise move? Appearantly Congreess thinks so…

I sometimes disagree with The Daily Kos, but in this one I think they are on to something.

They make the argument that this administration is in part driven by the desire to not be their parents and elders, to set their own way in the world. The problem being that their “world” is my world and your world and everyone else’s world and they don’t seem to realize that.

One day a democratic congressman found him self indicted for a crime. His associates on the other side of the isle decided this wasn’t the sort of thing they wanted in people who have leadership positions in the House so they made a rule that says you can’t both be in a leadership position and under indictment. It actually makes sense as you’re likely to be elsewhere defending yourself rather than leading.

So what happens when DeLay gets indicated? They changed the rules.

I received the following article from one of the computer security mailing lists I’m on. I’ll be curious to following it if in fact the FBI is involved. It will be nice to have the government looking in to such things. [Ignore the fact that the government is run by Bush for now].

I have no idea how true or not any of this is. The only reason I pass it on is the fact that it claims the investigation is being passed on to the FBI.

The Republicans own. They have a political organization unlike any other. MoveOn.org, the DNC, the DLC, everyone else pales in comparison. They run it from the top down. What’s the advantage?

They start with the local state races. They get their people in to state office. This lets them set districting patterns that will give them their congressman and senators. They have the governors mansions. They spend a lot of money to get this done. Why? Because these people are the core of the ground game for the national elections. They set the tone and the volume level of the message. They gear it to their own people who they know and who know them. Then when the national candidate comes in and talks values, talks morality, talks about abstract concepts he’s talking straight to you. He’s talking to you about the values your congressman talked about, the values your governor talked about, the values your city councilman talks about.

The fact is, Bush didn’t campaign in a lot of states, but he was able to make enough noise in national television spots and the debates that gave him the overwhelming popular vote (with respect to the last campaign). He got everyone out to the polls to vote for the values their local representatives have campaigned on. The only Republican strong enough to disagree with him is Arnold, and well, when you’re George Bush you don’t argue with Arnold, you use him as much as you can and realize you’re not getting California. Bush (nor I) are ready to get pumped up by Arnold.

So what do the Democrats do? They need to define the core values of the party. They need to spread that message. Then they need to decide what each local politician and representative is going to be responsible for selling in their area and have them sell it. That way when the national candidate comes in to talk to voters people already know what to expect. They know what they are listening for, and they get it.

Why is this? I believe it’s because it’s too easy to attack a national candidate. Once you run for President you’re skeletons are coming out. They are going to find every way to attack you and they will. On the other hand it’s nearly impossible to find ways to attack 200 congressman, 45 senators and thousands of state and local level politicians. These are the guys building the trust for the message. The national candidate then comes in and says “What he said! Yea!” and flies away.

And the crowd goes nuts. They know where he stands on every position. The trust they have for their local candidates is transfered magically to the national candidate. There’s a warm glow everywhere.

I have a lot of respect for conservatives. On the other hand there’s the politicians who use them. I really believe most conservative politicians are no worse than most liberal politicians but those aren’t the ones we have in power at the moment. These are.

How do we reach out to the voters to show them where the country is heading, why and how there’s a better way?

Issues that are going to divide this country in the next four years are issues that come down to competing values. When there is a balance between these values things run well. I believe in the next four years we will see an unbalancing if these values.

In the war on terror there’s the values of security and liberty. In the pro choice/pro life fight there’s the values of life, liberty and planned parenthood. The issue of homosexuality there’s the values of liberty, equal protection and the conservative family.

What happens when security, life and the conservative family are placed above liberty, planned parenthood and the conservative family? How do we identify these things and present a different way to lead this country?

I believed that if Bush won reelection it would be the worst thing to happen to this country since I’ve been able to pay attention and likely since McCarthyism. Now that he’s one reelection it’s time to hold him, his allies and his policies accountable. Despite the small margin of victory and the divided nature of his support he’s got a clear mandate. The GOP owns congress. There’s only five senators holding him back from having everything he wants in the Senate. He’s going to execute his plan. This plan will cause problems and the way to attack them is at the foundation, the principles and philosophy he uses to govern this country.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe everything will get better in the next four years. I’m not counting on it though.

The Daily Kos gets it wrong again.

“We need to retake the language. We need to reframe the notion of “value".

and later

“That leaves the two “faith based” wedges – gays and abortion. And with great skill, the Republicans have equated those two issues with the word “value".

“That’s going to have to change.”

Values are values and we can’t change that other people have what they call values as values no more than they can change the fact that I call what I call values values. (oh do I need an editor).

More importantly Democrats, progressives and liberals need to have their own values, define them well and communicate to America why they have those values and, when they are in disagreement with each other, how we make those value choices.

The sentiment is correct that people can’t continue to let the Republicans set the rules, define the terms and choose the field of battle but trying to tell people that their stance against homosexuality isn’t a “value” will just piss them off. Telling them that freedom for everyone to pursue their lives as they see fit, even when that means they must live with others practicing beliefs they don’t like, is one of their values is most more likely to garner respect.

This article at War and Peace highlights a key misunderstanding many liberals have of the conservative movement.

Evangelical Christians are named so because they are evangelical. Why are they evangelical? There is but one path to salvation and it is through Jesus Christ. It is their job to spread that word and through their love of you the only proper thing they can do is to try to save you.

Evangelical’s believe they have the answer, and more importantly that they have the only answer. Theirs is the path to salvation and any other leads to a life of eternal damnation. Combine with their love for you, well, you know what happens. I won’t say that this isn’t used politically in unethical ways by bigots but to characterize the conservative movement as a gay-baiting creates the elitist views they have of liberals. Evangelicals are trying to do the right thing as they see it. They are in a fight beyond life and death, but for eternal salvation.

Laura quotes M as saying “I just can’t fathom how large the threat of gay marriage looms in the eyes of the Christian right wing.” It’s the threat of eternal damnation.

Now, I don’t agree with the Evangelicals. I’m not even Christian. I’ve spent most of my life as a Unitarian Universalist which is about as tolerant as you can get. On the other hand I believe when we ascribe to malice what can easily be misunderstanding we misrepresent the conservatives. There’s two problems with this. The first is that we fail to understand them and, in order to succeed, we must really understand them. The second is that when we do this we are being offensive to them. If we are busy offending them there is no way we can gain their respect and begin to work together with them to find ways that I can be allowed to live in and suffer the consequences of my own sins.

Certainly there are individuals in the Republican political leadership who uses the fears of the Evangelical Christian community for political gain but we should be careful in how we identify those individuals and when we ascribe those motives to them least we become bigots ourselves. Also we should never forget that there’s dishonesty and misrepresentation on both sides.

Don’t look to the Republicans for why the Democrats lost this election. There is nothing they did that Democrats, progressives or liberals can or could have changed. Look within yourself and think about what you could have done to lead more people to your cause, least we become George Bush and blame our failures on everyone else.

Andrew Sullivan makes the case for Federalism and in doing so captures why in a lot of ways I consider myself conservative.

This election makes it obvious we are not one country. We are several countries. The west coast from northern California north, the north east and the upper midwest are three distinct areas and those are all “blue states". On the red side I see the “south", Florida (well, central and south Florida, north Florida is more southern), the midwest and the southwest.

Despite the world getting smaller our country is still rather large and it’s people rather diverse. Liberalism means knowing that what’s right for you isn’t always what’s right for everyone. At points in our history it’s been appropriate for the federal government to step in and change things. Slavery and integration come to mind. On the other hand there’s a ton of issues where I have strong beliefs but can’t see imposing them on everyone.

There are two issues that I disagree with Andrew on, they are gay rights and abortion. I believe gay couples should be able to get married and that homosexuality should have protected status. I believe that the government should not have the right to interfere in how a person treats their own body. The first is because I believe it is a fact that people can not make a conscious choice to “not be gay". People are who they are and that should be respected and more importantly protected. The second is because when the government legislates how people treat their own body proscribing and prescribing things they can control people. Imagine if the government could prescribe medication that you must take. In addition is my belief that liberty is more important than life in society. The liberty of everyone outweighs the lives of the few.

I don’t believe, unlike Andrew if I read him correctly, that federalism should be used to grant the religious states their government based on their religious beliefs. On the other hand if they wish to make things illegal which do not remove essential liberties, so be it. The right to smoke weed is not an essential liberty, nor are stem cell research and human cloning.

Blackboxvoting.org is issuing FOIA requests for logs and documents relating to the election to see if they can find evidence of any chicanery.

My thought to identify problems would be to compare exit poll numbers from computer voting locations to those without and see if the discrepancy (of which there is bound to be some) is different between the two. For example if in non computer polling locations the error was +/-5 compared to actual and in places that used a particular type of computer voting machine that leaves no paper trail the error was consistently in one direction, say between 0% and +10% for one candidate, then you might look there for evidence of chicanery.

Democrats taking consolation in the idea that Bush will have to continue to answer for his policies rather than have a president that has to clean up after Bush. The Daily Kos suggests that this will make for good mid terms.

This is the wrong attitude. This is the attitude of elite superiority (ever wonder why people voted against us). We need a leadership based on solid principles and philosophy. We need to distill that philosophy to form sound public policy. If the policy you derive from that seems too radical you should not compromise the policy or the principle, but instead look at which principles you failed to incorporate from which you can still distill sound policy.

What are the principles and philosophy liberals should use to lead this country with?

We’ve figured out that Terry isn’t getting the job done for the Democrats. The Daily Kos suggests Howard Dean. I like that idea.

Howard Dean connected with people. People wanted to follow him. They were desperate for a leader and they found it in him. His primary melt down was rather interesting and I think he should have fought harder before giving his famous yell. He understood something fundamental, people are hungry for a leader. They are hungry for someone who will speak to them and will follow you rabidly when you do. That crowd of rabid followers will bring the rest in to the fold.

I see it as the Apple and Microsoft fight in the Democratic party. Dean was the Apple. His followers really really wanted him to win. Kerry was the Microsoft. People voted for him because they lacked what they perceive as a better choice. This works well in a closed environment where those are the only two players. On the other hand after you win that battle you have to fight the next one, the fight with the Republicans (I don’t have an appropriate metaphor for them yet). In that fight the Democrats fled the party in key states. Lack of leadership.

Dean brings that leadership quality.

I imagine the RNC isn’t thinking about changing leadership under any circumstances save possibly retirement, and even then if I were the party I wouldn’t accept resignation after this victory.

I just heard a Badnarik commercial on CNN. I can’t believe he’s got the money to run a commercial like that. The bulk of it was that if you can’t vote for Kerry vote for Badnarik. It was run by his campaign with the “I approve this message” bit at the end. I wonder what democratic group is supporting him.

The Christian Science Monitor has this interview with John Zogby of Zogby International. Interesting quote..

“You had voters, particularly his base, looking for old-time Democratic religion about education and about healthcare…. [Kerry] should have run as a Democrat to Democrats and then focused on the undecideds in the last couple of weeks. And I think [not doing] that was an error.”

Kerry hasn’t quite alienated the Democratic base but there’s clearly a split between the DLC and traditional (post Nixon) Democrats.

This Editorial from USA Today talks about the looting that took place in the days, weeks and months after the US invaded Iraq. Three things of note here.

1) This talks about more than the high explosives, it talks about radioactive materials that have been looted
2) The US prevented the IAEA from inspecting sites. I thought that was why we had to go in in the first place
3) The date of the editorial. It’s from last year.

It’s time to get our heads out of the sand.

Many democrats and other Kerry supporters who would have easily supported John McCain have felt let down with the way he’s continued to support George Bush.

democrats.org has a nice quote by McCain saying

“Obviously some mistakes were made, to say the least, in allowing some of the looting. We have more troops there now, we probably should have had more troops.”

It looks like McCain is starting his move to distance himself from Bush. I think it’s clear he’s looking to run for President again 2008 no matter which way it breaks. He just has to figure out if he’s going to want to look like a Bush man or not. Today it seems the answer is “not”

We are fighting for one thing, to keep America safe. there’s not much else that justifies the wars we are waging right now. It’s important to understand that they are TWO wars. One for Bin Laden and his followers and another in Iraq. The players on the other side are helping each other out, but we set out to achieve two separate goals. The first was to take out Bin Laden and install a new government in Afghanistan that wouldn’t support him. the second was to install a new government in Iraq because they had WMD and that presented a clear and present danger to us.

The question for me is, was the war to find the person responsible for 9/11 so much less important than Iraq, a country that never attacked us, that we were planning for Iraq while we were busy letting Bin Laden get away?

While we should have had all our forces and efforts being used to get Bin Laden we were already planning for Iraq. Now Bin Laden is somewhere else making video tapes and is laughing at us. Meanwhile in Iraq American soldiers are getting killed bythe weapons Iraq did have and we failed to secure.

More rumors circulating the Internets: JPL scientist uses his image processing kung-fu on video images from the Presidential debate:

George W. Bush tried to laugh off the bulge. “I don’t know what that is,” he said on “Good Morning America” on Wednesday, referring to the infamous protrusion beneath his jacket during the presidential debates. “I’m embarrassed to say it’s a poorly tailored shirt.”

Dr. Robert M. Nelson, however, was not laughing. He knew the president was not telling the truth. And Nelson is neither conspiracy theorist nor midnight blogger. He’s a senior research scientist for NASA and for Caltech’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and an international authority on image analysis. Currently he’s engrossed in analyzing digital photos of Saturn’s moon Titan, determining its shape, whether it contains craters or canyons.

Electronic voting is all the rage these days. But is it a viable solution given the current state of technology? The most likely answer to that question is “No".

Electronic voting machines would seem to be the end-all and be-all of voting technology, but as the technology stands at the moment, there are some serious questions as to the viability and integrity of any election that uses them.

Numerous privacy and security experts who work with technology on a daily basis have raised serious concerns about electronic voting machines, and, to a large degree, these concerns have been ignored both by the manufacturers of such machines, and by the public officials who have certified them for use in a growing number of states. Among these concerns are the fact that these systems are in no way “open". There is no peer review guaranteeing the validity of the source code used in these machines by anyone, other than the manufacturers. There’s no way of reconciling the numbers that the machines report with the actual numbers of votes cast, because most models do not provide a paper trail. The outcome of the vote is no longer in the hands of the voters, but in the hands of companies who make the machines and may potentially have a political agenda. I’m just waiting to hear on the news one afternoon following this upcoming election that some hacker has called claiming that he altered the election results on a massive scale. The scramble to verify the claims will be frantic, and rife with confusion, and the validity of the election will remain forever in doubt, whether evidence of tampering is found or not.

It’s amazing how many people are under the impression that the United States is a democracy, but it’s not. It’s a fallacy that’s repeated over and over by the pundits on television, by the candidates, by teachers, by everyone. But in actual fact, the United States is not a democracy.

The United States is a republic, and people seem to forget that with amazing regularity. It’s my opinion that this is a good thing. Democracies have one major drawback, and the drawback is that the concept of a “tyranny by majority” becomes a very real danger when democracy is seen in action. We’ve seen numerous instances of this happening throughout history, and even recent history, but some people would have you believe that humanity has somehow magically moved beyond this natural tendency. Suprisingly, the most vocal proponents of moving to a pure democracy are those who, on the surface, are supposed to stand for the rights of minorities. Minority rights evaporate in a system where the governance is done solely by the majority. Think about the persecutions committed by majorities in the past, and ask yourself if you really believe that Americans are beyond such things, especially before you go extolling the virtues of democracy. At an individual level, yes, I believe a great number of us are beyond such things, but our thoughts and ideals are far too easily influenced when mob psychology comes into play, making things that we would individually consider to be henious or wrong completely acceptable when we’re part of a mob. Witness the riots in L.A., or the behavior of Red Sox fans after Game 4 the other night, and suddenly you realize that perhaps democracy isn’t such a good idea after all.

When the two agents arrived at the store, the lead agent asked Cox whether she carried a toy called the Magic Cube, which he said was an illegal copy of the Rubik’s Cube, one of the most popular toys of all time.

He told her to remove the Magic Cube from her shelves, and he watched to make sure she complied.

Not only that, but the patent on Rubik’s Cube has expired.

Marshal at TPM posted a transcript of a conversation between Aaron Brown of CNN and David Kay. They talk about the video that was filmed by an Embed with the 101st. Airborne in Al QaQaa.

The stuff was there when we got there, we broke the seals, broke the locks, opened the door and then left it unsecured. The soldiers on the ground didn’t realize what they were doing because they were not told what was there. That intelligence was not passed down to them.

Two things of interest in this interview. The fact that Iraq had two-thirds the conventional explosives as the entire US inventory, most of which was left unsecured even though we knew about it (because the IAEA knew about it).

The second is that Bush tried to take Kerry down for talking about this as if it’s Bush’s fault before all the facts were in. If there was one person who had the facts it was Bush. If he didn’t there’s *still* a big problem with intelligence that he hasn’t fixed. Either he had no idea what was going on there (big problem) or he knew the facts and tried to paint Kerry as irresponsible.

Kerry may not be your choice for CiC but can he be so bad as to let that much explosives just get looted?

So it seems Republicans are trying to push off the responsibility for securing 380 tons of explosives capable of detonating nuclear weapons on the soldiers.

Guiliani asks, “The actual responsibility for it really would be for the troops that were there, did they search carefully enough? Didn’t they search carefully enough?”

Is he denigrating our troops?!

It’s clear there weren’t enough troops there to search several square miles of the complex. From what I’ve read 101st was just there to stop for the night.

I think there was clearly a lack of planning on the part of the administration and the Pentagon as to how to secure Iraq and now Republicans are trying to make the soldiers on the ground responsible for the mistakes of the people at the top.

Welcome to Eediots. We are here to talk about politics. These things usually get uncivil and moved off of whatever mailing list/forum/place you’ve come from. We are here to get down and dirty. I (as the site admin) am going to attempt to take as much of a hands off approach to the discourse here as possible.

I’d like to keep things about the issues and candidates, but at times things may get personal. You can dislike it, you can respond to the attacks, but don’t bitch to me about it.

On the other hand I’m sure there’s going to be something that’s abusive and I’ll have to get my hands dirty and moderate. I really rather not though and I may try to find a ‘fair’ way to do this so that my running the site doesn’t affect that.
